Trauma & Resilience Education for the Judiciary:
Aligning What We Know with What We Do

Why Should the Judicial System Be Concerned About Trauma?

Research indicates that childhood trauma increases the risk of violent behavior by over 200% (Fox et al., 2015) and is strongly linked to justice system involvement, with up to 90% of teens and 75% of adults in the system reporting such trauma (Keels, 2024). In response, leading organizations—including the American Bar Association, the American Justice Association, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges—are advocating for trauma-informed practices within legal settings. As a result, courts are increasingly adopting therapeutic, trauma-sensitive approaches to better serve individuals involved in justice processes. Creating a trauma-informed court environment supports healing, reduces recidivism, and enhances fairness. Without this crucial shift, courts risk perpetuating cycles of multigenerational trauma that impede true justice.
